The other day I was talking to a dear friend about studying. I have never been an organized note taker. In fact, I am the only one who can actually make sense of my notes. After several debacles in college people realized NOT to ask me to be the group note taker. Too many rambling inconsistencies and less than standard formats.
The same thing happened when the whole Internet thing hit. Suddenly there were all these production people and guys who used to work for the cable companies, now coding the work of the art department. And they used words like nomenclature and hierarchy. Those guys used to get really mad at me. Can you stop naming files NEW ONE? they would say. We have no way of knowing what the hell that is.
I had lots of files on my desktop called Newone, Newone2, Newone3. You get the picture. Really I would just save it with whatever came to mind quickest. It wasnt much of a system, but it was MY system.
So anyway, my friend was saying how he uses colored pencils to highlight when he is studying. Come on! Seriously?? I said, laughing.
Colored pencils? Holy crap that is so weirdly non-committal. I said.
Not really he said. It allows me to mark things exactly like I want to.
Oh so maybe it is just weirdly anal then. I say chuckling to myself.
Who highlights in colored pencils? I think to myself. Eh, I blow it off.
But then, later, he pulls out this pristine binder with all these color-coded flags and colored pencil highlights. Check marks and communications printed out and three hole punched. Total organization.
Silence.
I could never do this.
Wow. Thats amazing. I say.
I guess, he says. This just is what works for me.
Yeah. Yeah. I say.
I guess we all have to do what works for us. How do you highlight?
